Dear all,

In my problem I have to update the material properties of the elements every-time step using complex algorithms.

Is it possible to force ANSYS to go through the algorithms every time step during the solution and at the same time use automatic adaptive time stepping method ?

How are you updating your material properties? If these are complex algorithms as you say, you should be doing it with a user fortran routine (usermat.f). Auto time stepping would be available.

Hi Joe,

I am actually updating heat transfer coefficient of a two nodded element "Link34"

the heat transfer coefficient of the element depends upon the temperatures at two nodes and the amount of heat flow through the element in the previous time step.

I had once tried to used user116hf.f but didn't succeed.

I have attached the txt file of the model.

I had a similar problem in doing couple field transients with induction heating; the temperature affected the resistivity which affected the skin depth which affected the power induced. It was not an elegant solution, but the load steps were increased (decreased the time step) until there were no significant change in the power induced. To overcome the lack of changing the time step, a table was defined with respect to time and it could be controlled that way. Most times I had more data than needed, but that was preferred over the alternative. A three phase neutral bus was done in this manner (steady state) with 60Hz, 40kA and the electrical measurements (AMPS) and thermal measurements matched real well with the ANSYS (EMAG) and thermal results.
