Now that we have finally got everybody who was previously subscribed added to XANSYS and removed a fairly large number who no longer wished to be subscribed, the Moderators can go back to looking at a new software platform for XANSYS.

Historically XANSYS was purely a mailing list until Jason Krantz at PADT added a Forum in 2008. This is a popular addition with the younger members of XANSYS but has caused a high work load for the Moderators and several serious outages because the linkage to the mailing list is via an unsupported piece of Open Source software and requires the Forum to run an antique version of phpBB.

My current thought is that any replacement should be an integrated solution offering both an email distribution list and web access for reading, archive searching and posting. We have so far looked at Groupserver (http://groupserver.org) and are currently starting to evaluate Mailman 3.

However I though it was worth asking whether users have experience of other software that might meet our perceived requirement or indeed whether members think we should stick with either solely a mailing list or solely a Forum?

Hi Martin,

My vote would be for the combined email list / forum solution as I find both useful. However if it were a vote for one or the other, I would go with the forum option.
Thanks for all your efforts keeping this running by the way.

Best regards,

Jon.

Martin,

My vote would be first for the email list and then for the combined solution.
The daily digest allows for a quick look at current topics.

Regards,

Hi Martin,

I was just wondering if there had been any developments in fixing the issues with the XANSYS forum, and if it was still the intention to re-establish the link between the forum and the mailing list? I think the last update was in September when you were considering different software platform options.
Obviously there are a lot less responses to pots on the forum since the link went down, but I personally still find the forum very useful in terms of being able to search through previous posts and responses. Anyway I hope that this is still the intention? Thanks for all your efforts maintaining the XANSYS groups by the way!

Kind regards,
Jon.

The Forum is run by PADT Inc and they have,as far as I a aware no plans to fix the link. Progress on a replacement is slower than hoped; the moderator who was looking at one of the options hasn't made contact for some months and the greater moderating workload on me plus the humdrum business of making a living means I have not had much time to spend on evaluating replacements.

Hi Martin,

Thanks for the update. It would seem a shame to loose that functionality. Hope they can re-establish the link with the new software platform.

Thanks again.

Jon.

Definitely not. PADT Inc do not wish to run the new system but it is possible they will financially support XANSYS.

The Forum in its current state will certainly be removed. The use of two incompatible systems linked by an obsolete and unmaintained piece of software has been a nightmare for the moderators creating an enormous work load and endlessly confuses users. We hop to replace the current setup with a single solution that will support both a web interface and a mailing list.
